About the Book

Aalo Andharer Kobita is a collection of poems and songs in Bengali which reflects the thoughts and ideas of the author, Aparajita Ray.

The poems are based on her keen observations of nature, the seasons, life in East Bengal before the Partition, the plight of the underprivileged, women’s lives, city life, old age, and more. They express the light and darkness that make up life, the grief, the joy, love, romance, loneliness, the anguish of parting, hope, and helplessness.

The author, also a singer, wrote lyrics for songs. She put tunes to these verses and delighted many friends through her renditions. Some of these verses are included in this book.

About the Author

Aparajita Ray was born in Potazia, Pabna district, in East Bengal of undivided India. She was educated in Pabna and trained in singing. Just after the Partition, Aparajita married Dr. Pranaba Kumar Roy and moved to Patna. The couple travelled worldwide, and lived in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea, before settling in Kolkata. Aparajita’s letter to a niece, describing her first impression of Indonesia, was published in a Bengali paper, ‘Katha Sahitya‘. A keen observer, Aparajita channelled her imagination and intense feelings about her life experiences into writing poetry and songs. She started writing regularly in middle age, after her daughters were grown up. A woman of many parts, Aparajita is appreciated for her singing, creativity, and culinary skills, within her social circles.
