About the Book
Legal System in Goa, Vol. I and II were first published in 1994 and 1995 respectively. The two books cover over five hundred years of history, unfolded at a point on the map of the world. Through these pages, one moves to the four corners of the world from Mare Clausum to Mare Liberum, from colonial empire to Overseas Provinces, from attempts to build a sea empire that needed no ground roots to Sovereignty claims over soils of Africa and Asia.
In the books, one moves from the Continental System to a Common Law System where the liberated territories were hauled from the Portuguese Constitution of 1933 to the Indian Constitution of 1950, a unique feat in legal history worth recording. Legal System in Goa may motivate further research to the problem faced in the globalization era, where attempts are made at minimum harmonization between the Common Law System and the Continental Law System.
