The book critically examines the pattern of employment of rural people involved in non-farm sector as their primary source of income. Are they driven away from the farm sector in despair or is it the pull attraction of the non-farm sector that promises greener field to them? The book seeks to explore the forces that underlie the prevailing trend among the workers to shift from the farm to the non-farm sector. The study focuses on the state of Uttar Pradesh that has received scant attention in literature. It makes use of both micro-level data collected at the household level as well the latest available macro-level data.
